Come, Worship With Us!
Visiting a new church for the first time can be somewhat intimidating. We hope to make the process more comfortable for you by sharing a little bit of information to help you prepare for your first visit.
Christ Church UCC worships in a historic brick church located in the heart of downtown Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania on S. Market St.
With magnificent stained glass windows and welcoming bells chiming each day at noon and 6 p.m., and on Sunday mornings, the people of Christ Church extend an invitation for you to worship with us. Whether you are in the area for a short time, or you are looking for a new church home, come and experience our hospitality. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!
Worship Times and Dress
There are two worship services at Christ Church - 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Worship at 10:30 a.m. features our Chancel Choir, as well as other musical ensembles. This is the most popular worship time for many. Beginning five minutes before worship, one of the pastors will offer announcements.
Dress on any given Sunday is "come as you are." Some choose to dress up, and others may come in more casual attire.
Parking and entering the building
We offer ample parking, and a ramp is located beneath the portico at the rear of the building for your convenience should you use a wheelchair or walker. Plenty of handicapped parking spaces are conveniently located close by.
All doors to Christ Church are open - feel free to enter any of them. If you are running late, however, and worship has begun, be aware that it may be best to enter the double glass doors by the front gardens (along S. Market St.) as the Head Usher may have secured the other doors.
As you enter the sanctuary, a greeter will offer you a bulletin to assist you in engaging in our worship of God in Christ. Feel free to sit where ever you like!
Five minutes before the start of worship, one of the Pastors will offer a few announcements, after which will be a call to worship and organ prelude. Your bulletin will help you follow along. Worship and music at Christ Church is generally traditional, though some contemporary musical offerings and elements are incorporated from time to time. Should you be visiting with us on a Communion Sunday, our bread is gluten-free so that all may partake.
Red Hospitality Folders are available for pick up for first time visitors. Please take one home with you and look over our newsletter, as well as other information about the United Church of Christ. If you wish to have someone follow up with you, you are encouraged to complete a Visitor’s Card and either drop it in the offering plate or in a basket by the door on your way out of the sanctuary.
Faith Formation, Infants, and Children
Faith Formation (the term we use for “Sunday School”) for preschoolers through adults is during the 9 a.m. hour, and nursery care is provided during both services for children ages birth - 5. For more information about our Faith Formation programs, please visit that page here.
Of course, children are always welcome in worship! Children’s bulletins and crayons are available from the front of the sanctuary. As part of the second worship service and each Sunday throughout the summer, we offer a special Children’s Moment. Children in attendance love to come to the front of the sanctuary for Children’s Moment to hear a short story or lesson related to that morning’s lectionary; children who may be shy might prefer a parent come forward with them. You know your child best and it’s a good idea to take your cue from them.
If your baby becomes fussy or you wish to nurse privately, you are welcome to go upstairs to the nursery, or an usher can help direct you to a quiet, comfortable spot nearby.
Nursery care is available during worship and is staffed with a paid nursery attendant and two adult volunteers. All of our nursery staff have current child safety clearances on file in the church office.
Additional Useful Information
For anyone who may be hearing impaired, ushers (those wearing white carnations) can provide you with a hearing assistance device upon request.
From 10:00 a.m. - 10:20 a.m., folks like to gather for cookies and coffee, tea, or juice in the “Cookie Room.” This time for fellowship is a chance for new and old friends to gather and chat! The Cookie Room is located at the end of the long hallway on the main floor.
